Some Paternal Ancestors of Edwin Brown (“Big Doc”) KUGLER Sr

Rebecca HARNED (c1728–1790) 1

Rebecca was born in Middlesex Co, NJ. In the early to mid 1740s she married William Benjamin Rittenhouse Jr. They settled on a farm near Locktown, Amwell (now Delaware) Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, and had 11 children—Isaac, Benjamin William, Garret, Hannah, William, Rebecca, Abner, Daniel, Catherine, Abigail, and Anna. Family oral tradition has it that, before the Revolution, three of their sons moved to southwestern PA.

“In about the 1770s, Rebecca may have died after tumbling into and drowning in the well at the tavern of her late father-in-law [Wm B Rittenhouse Sr].” This statement is from Love’s “Our Rittenhouse Families”2; I have been unable to find corroboration elsewhere. In fact, in the immediately preceding paragraph, Love makes the conflicting declaration “REBECCA died 1799 in Locktown, New Jersey, USA, at age 71.” Other sources say she died in 1780 or 1790. At any rate, whenever and however she died, she died near Locktown, Amwell (now Delaware) Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ.
