Some Paternal Ancestors of Edwin Brown (“Big Doc”) KUGLER Sr

Edward M HARNETT Sr (c1598–1658)

Edward M Sr was born on the Isle of Thanet, Kent, England, and christened there at St-Mary’s-in-Minster1, an ancient church also known as the “Cathedral on the Marshes”. In 1619, at St Laurence Church2, Ramsgate, Isle of Thanet, he married Sysley (?a phonetic rendition of “Cecily”) Parramor (b c1595 England, d ?Connecticut).

At some point Edward and his wife came to the New World, though the exact date is not known. Edward Harnet Sr is mentioned several times in Salem, MA, records between 1638 and 1658. He was referred to as a yeoman, or small farmer who owns his land. He and his wife were admitted to the First Church in Salem in 1643. However, Essex Co, MA, court records show that Edward Sr was fined in 1657 for absence from First Church meeting, perhaps an indication that he was a Society of Friends (Quaker) adherent. (The Harnetts may have been Quakers even before they left England.) The next year several individuals with whom the Harnetts associated were accused of attending a Quaker meeting.

That year, 1658, Edward M Harnett Sr died in Salem, Essex Co, Massachusetts Bay Colony.
