Some Paternal Ancestors of Edwin Brown (“Big Doc”) KUGLER Sr

John KUGLER Jr (c1777–1847)1

John Jr was born and died in Kingwood Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ, though he spent three years in the early 1800s living at or near his brother Joseph’s mill in Bucks County, PA. Then he returned to New Jersey and lived on the family farm with his brother Jacob.2 He married Hannah Snyder (1772–1840) in 1797 in the Kingwood Baptist Church. She was born in Hunterdon County and was the daughter of John Snyder (b c1746), who had a mill just inland from the Kugler farmstead at Milltown (aka Idell). Hannah’s sister Elizabeth married John’s brother Joseph.3 John and Hannah are supposed to have had three sons and seven daughters, but I have found only the names of the sons—James, John III and Samuel.

“John Kugler . . . accumulated an extensive fortune. His calling in life was that of a tiller of the soil [except when boating on the Delaware?—See his son James Kugler], and in the exercise of his duties he was always prompt and faithful.”4

John inherited and operated the homestead farm established by his father, Johannes. There is a Chester County, Pennsylvania (where Johannes also owned property), will naming Johannes’s wife and three sons as executors. Records state that sons Joseph and John “refused to appear”.5 After John’s death his son Samuel farmed the homestead. Late in life, after Hannah’s death, John remarried, to Mary Getty (b c1778).
