Some Paternal Ancestors of Edwin Brown (“Big Doc”) KUGLER Sr

William Benjamin RITTENHOUSE Jr (1725–c1799)1

He was probably born in the Kreisheim district of Germantown, Philadelphia Co, PA, but it is not certain when his father moved the family to Hunterdon Co, NJ. In October 1743, when he was 18, William was baptized in the newly established Kingwood Baptist Church. Since this was not the church of his parents, it may have been that of his fiancée, though her father was a Quaker. He married (mid 1740s) Rebecca Harned (c1728 Middlesex Co, NJ–c1790 Locktown, Amwell [now Delaware] Twp, Hunterdon Co, NJ). They had 11 children—Isaac, Benjamin, Garret, Hannah, William, Rebecca, Abner, Daniel, Catherine, Abigail, and Anna. The Rittenhouses lived on a farm just west of Locktown, “on a hill on the north side of the Locktown-Kingwood road”. Family tradition claims that, before the American Revolution, three of the sons moved to the Redstone country of southwestern PA (today’s Fayette and Westmoreland counties, PA). After Rebecca’s death William married Elizabeth van Norman, a widow. William died in Locktown, Amwell Twp, at age 71. He is buried near Prallsville, Delaware Twp, Hunterdon Co.
